Coffee to Water Ratio Guide
The coffee to water ratio is the single most important variable in brewing. Get it right and your coffee will be balanced and flavorful. Get it wrong and no technique can save it.
Ratio by Brewing Method
- Espresso: 1:2 (18g coffee → 36g out). Light roasts: 1:2.5. Dark roasts: 1:1.5-2.
- Pour over (V60, Chemex): 1:15 to 1:17. Start with 15g coffee to 250g water.
- French press: 1:15. 30g coffee to 450g water.
- AeroPress: 1:12 to 1:16 depending on method.
- Cold brew: 1:8 for concentrate, 1:15 for ready-to-drink.
- Moka pot: Fill the basket, water to valve. Roughly 1:10.
